SETTING UP YOUR HANGOUT
If you are invited to be a participant, read the following very carefully. The points below are CRUCIAL to your participation:
1. DOWNLOAD THE HANGOUT APP:
If you've never done a Hangout on the computer you are using, you will need to download the google Hangout "app" before you can participate. On the day before the Hangout or sooner, Go here: http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/
Under the picture are 3 black buttons: "Get it on Google Play", "Download on the App store" and "Available for your Computer." Click the 3rd one "Available for your Computer" to download the app, and follow the instructions. If you have a problem, let us know ASAP!
2. JOINING THE HANGOUT:
The best way to join the Hangout, we've found, is for us to EMAIL the link to you. So check your email at the address you have given us 5 minutes before the Hangout time. When you get the link, click it to join.
3. For the event, you need to close all your browser windows, except the Hangout.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We will help you get set up when you join the Hangout, but because SOUND is the thing that goes wrong most often on Hangouts, you must read these MANDATORY SOUND TIPS:
- The same sound control on your computer, which you use when you watch a video, lets you raise and lower the sound of the hangout. Please LOWER THE SOUND at the beginning to avoid echoes!
- Do you have external speakers attached to your computer? If so, you MUST USE HEADPHONES so you don’t disrupt the conversation! If you have external speakers but don't have headphones, we will MUTE your microphone during the conversation until it is your turn to speak. But this is less fun for you!
- If, when you join the hangout, you see a notice saying “Due to the number of participants your mic is muted by default”, then use the CHAT function to tell us you have joined.
VIDEO TIP:
We will help you, but save time and make sure that there is light on your face, and try to avoid bright light behind you, such as light from a window. If that is the case, you might just turn yourself and your computer around 180 degrees so the window light is on your face.
